چکیده

fractions of bracken fern-fed cattle and of cows bearing spontaneous urinary bladder tumors contained some carcinogenic substance(s) which induced tumors in the bladder of the calf, dog, rat, or mouse and tumors in the skin of mice. It is not known whether this carcinogenic activity is attributable to bracken fern itself or to its metabolites. It has been shown (22) that the carcinogenicity of the crude cycad material and of cycasin in rats depends on an intestinal bacterial flora capable of providing the enzyme @3-glucosidase, necessary for the liberation of the aglycone, methylazoxymethanol. In germ-free rats, cycasin per se, whether present in the intestinal tract or absorbed and excreted, is innocuous. It was desirable to determine whether a similar mechanism operates in the carcinogenicity of crude bracken fern, or whether the fresh bracken fern itself contains the carcinogenic substance before digestion in the animal body. Therefore, it was decided to test fractions of bracken fern for carcinogenic activity on the bladder epithelium of the mouse. The results of these experiments are the subject of this report.

Assay of fractions of bovine urine for carcinogenic activity after feeding bracken fern (Pteris aquilina).

Urine from cattle fed fresh and dried bracken fern for more than 2 years and urine from control cattle was extracted with ethyl acetate and divided into nonacidic and acidic fractions. The residue obtained after removal of the solvent was mixed with 4 times its weight of cholesterol, and the mixture was converted to pellets with the aid of a pellet press. Pellets containing these residues were ...

Lymphatic leukemia and pulmonary tumors in female Swiss mice fed bracken fern (Pteris aquilina).

Bracken fern (Pteris aquilina) mixed with a grain mixture (1:3 by weight) was fed to a group of 40 female 6-week-old Swiss mice intermittently every other week for a total experimental period of 60 weeks. Thirty-three mice survived 30 or more weeks and all developed lymphatic leukemia with multiple organ involvement. Additionally, 5 mice developed multiple pulmonary tumors. No urinary bladder o...

The induction of neoplasms of the urinary bladder of the cow and the small intestine of the rat by feeding bracken fern (Pteris aquilina).

Cattle were fed a diet containing bracken fern in the continuation of a study of the urinary bladder neoplasms produced under these conditions. One of the cattle died of a traumatic pericarditis and had no bladder lesion at 485 days. The other six animals fed bracken fern for from 510 to 1920 days all had gross bladder neoplasms. Four of the six animals with gross bladder neoplasms had transiti...

Carcinogenic and mutagenic activities of milk from cows fed bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum).

Carcinogenicity, toxicity, and mutagenicity of the milk of bracken fern (BF)-fed cows were determined. Four Brown Swiss cows were fed a BF-containing diet, and two cows were fed a normal hay-grain diet. The milk obtained was fed to rats as either fresh or freeze-dried powdered milk mixed with grain diet: 9 of 34 fed whole milk and 11 of 56 fed powdered milk diet developed small intestine, kidne...

Antithiamine Factors of Ferns1

That Pteris aquilina, a spccies of fern, destroys thiamine, or possesses "anti thiamine activity" or "antianeurine factor" has been reported by Weswig (1), Thomas (2) and Evans (3). Similar factors, though somewhat weaker in activity, have also been found in Aspidium filix mas, Dryapteris austriaca and Nephrolepsis exaltata by Somogyi (4, 5, 6) and in Equisetum arvense by Evans et al. (7). Acco...
